Book Description
This book investigates the linkage between democracy, governance, peace and security on one hand and poverty eradication and achievement of MDGs on the other with a view to highlight the impact on human security; and whether SADC is moving in the right direction in these parameters, and if not, what concrete steps can be taken to ensure that SADC is on course! It also identifies additional knowledge required in these areas, which will enable better understanding and appreciation of challenges to poverty reduction in Southern Africa. In fact, the link between poverty, legal empowerment and pro-poor governance is gradually being accepted, but some key interrelationships between elements of these sectors remain open to debate. Alleviating poverty is too daunting a task to be just left to governments. It needs an integrated and holistic approach when working towards global peace and poverty alleviation. All stakeholders must work together for this project to be successful - above all national governments. Sadly, in the South, governments representing the people most in need of coordinated efforts and socio-economic resources, appear to be the biggest obstacle in fighting poverty. This does not mean that poverty alleviation should solely be placed in the hands of governments. However, without the will to democracy, commitment to social transformation of society and change of attitude with regards to corruption, it is hard to imagine what kind of holistic toolboxes SADC members and stakeholders can come up with that will change the status quo.
